The Origin of Species
By Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life
The publication of The Origin of Species in 1859 marked an intellectual revolution comparable to that associated with the names of Copernicus and Galileo. By proposing a theory of “descent with modification” and “natural selection,” Darwin provided answers to the questions that preoccupied the naturalists of his time. The radical nature of these answers as well as the problems they left unresolved immediately fueled polemics and controversies. Hence the additions and digressions that, over the course of the six successive editions of the work, came to obscure the original purpose. By pruning Edmond Barbier’s translation of what was not in the 1859 edition and restoring what had disappeared, the present volume allows the French-speaking reader to rediscover this work in its initial freshness.
